Generative engine optimization

GEO agency in New York

New York buyers see an AI answer above the search results and ask ChatGPT for shortlists. We work the sources those answers cite and report every month on how often they name you.

Getting named in New York

Google launched AI Overviews in the US first, in May 2024, and New York buyers now see an AI answer at the top of many searches before any link. An engine asked for a provider in New York has hundreds to choose from, and it picks the ones that independent sources name most consistently: trade press, review platforms, industry lists and comparison pages.

It also has to know where you are. Buyers ask about New York, NYC, Manhattan and the other boroughs separately, and your site and listings need to say which you serve.

GEO in New York is mostly earned-media work: getting the sources that decide your category to name you, and checking every month whether they have started to.

The AI engines we optimize for

Each engine finds its sources in its own way. We track the ones your buyers use and work on the sources each of them reads.

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google's AI answers sit above the search results and draw on pages in Google's own index, with the sources listed beside the answer. Pages that already rank give them something to cite.

  • ChatGPT

ChatGPT answers from its training and, for recent or local questions, from a live web search. When it searches, it names its sources, and those are the pages we work to get you onto.

  • Gemini

Google's assistant uses Google Search for current information, so it reads many of the same sources as Google's AI answers.

  • Perplexity

Perplexity searches the web for every question and numbers its sources under the answer. A page that states its answer early and plainly is easier for it to quote.

  • Claude and Copilot

Claude searches the web when a question needs it, and Microsoft Copilot answers from Bing. Both cite what they use, and both need their crawlers to reach your site.

How we run GEO in New York

Three things decide whether an engine names you: whether it can reach your pages, whether it can tell you are one company, and whether independent sources back up what you claim. We work on all three at once, because the quick fixes land in a week and the earned sources take two quarters.

  1. Visibility Baseline

We put twenty or thirty of your buyers’ real questions to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI answers, and record who got named, what got cited, and whether anything said about you was wrong. Everything after this is measured against that first run.

  2. Source Mapping

We find the sources those answers actually draw on in your category and score where you stand on each one. Some are a form and a fee. Some need a year of evidence behind them. The list comes back ordered by what it costs and what it returns.

  3. Crawler Access

AI crawlers have their own user agents, and sites block them by accident all the time through robots.txt, a WAF rule or a bot-protection default nobody chose. We check that GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended can reach your pages, and that what they reach is HTML and not an empty shell waiting on JavaScript.

  4. Entity Consistency

An engine has to be confident you are one company. We make your name, address, founding date, leadership and service descriptions agree across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, Wikidata and every directory you appear in. Details that contradict each other make you harder to cite.

  5. Quotable Content

We restructure the pages that answer your buyers’ questions so the answer sits near the top, the claims are specific enough to lift, and the numbers carry a source. A page that takes four paragraphs to reach its point gets skipped.

  6. Earned Coverage and Monthly Reporting

We go after mentions in publications, review sites and communities that did not invoice us for them, then re-run your question set every month. You see citation share move, or you see that it has not.

What you get every month

All four are yours to keep, whether or not you stay with us.

  • The question set

20 to 30 of your buyers' real questions, agreed with you at the start and put to every engine each month.

  • The citation log

Every answer, the companies it named and the sources it cited, recorded month by month.

  • The source scorecard

Each source that decides your category, where you stand on it, and what it takes to get onto it.

  • The monthly report

Your share of citations against the companies you compete with, what changed, and the work planned for next month.

Who we run GEO for

Which sources decide an AI answer depends on your category. These are the ones we work in most.

  • Law firms

Legal answers lean on directories such as Chambers, The Legal 500 and Justia, and on named lawyers with credentials an engine can check. Our law firm practice, Konan & Spade LMA, runs this work for firms.

  • Software and B2B services

Software answers lean on G2, Capterra and Reddit threads more than on company websites, so reviews and community mentions carry the weight.

  • Ecommerce

Product answers draw on review sites, comparison pages and forums, along with the product details on your own pages, which have to be complete and consistent.

  • Real estate

Local property questions lean on Google Business Profile, reviews and portal listings, so your agency details have to match wherever they appear.

Why New York businesses work with us

We run the same GEO framework from every office, adjusted for the sources that decide your category in New York.

  • We wrote the book on it

Our founder Pawan Khatri's GEO for Law Firms, published in July 2026, sets out the framework we run for every client, whatever the category.

  • Reporting you keep

You get the question set, the citation log and the source scorecard, and they stay yours. If six months of work has not changed how often the engines name you, your own reports will show it.

GEO in New York: common questions

What does a GEO agency do?

A GEO (generative engine optimization) agency works to get your company named when buyers ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews for a recommendation. Most of the work happens on the independent sources those engines trust, with your own site kept accurate so they can confirm the details.

Is GEO worth it in a market this competitive?

It matters more in a crowded market. With hundreds of providers to choose from, an engine can name only a few, and it names the ones independent sources mention most consistently. Getting into those sources takes months in any market, which is why it pays to start early.

Does GEO work differently in Brooklyn or Queens than in Manhattan?

For local services it does. An engine answering a question about the best accountant in Brooklyn looks for evidence of Brooklyn: an address, a page about the borough, or reviews that mention it. A New York City page that lists all five boroughs gives it little to go on for any one of them.

How long before GEO shows results?

The quick fixes, such as unblocking AI crawlers and making your company details agree everywhere, land within a week or two. Mentions in independent sources take about two quarters, because they have to be earned.

How do you measure GEO?

We put the same 20 to 30 buyer questions to each engine every month and log who gets named and which sources get cited. Your share of those citations over time is the number to watch.

Do we still need SEO?

Yes. Google's AI answers draw on pages it has indexed, and several AI engines search the web before they answer. Pages that rank give them something to cite.

How much does GEO cost in New York?

Our GEO engagements start at $2,000 a month. The price depends on how many engines and questions we track and how much earned-coverage work your category needs. The audit that starts it is free.

Can you guarantee we'll be cited?

No. The engines decide what they cite, and no agency controls that. What we show you instead is the citation log: which answers named you each month, and which sources moved.

What's in the free GEO audit?

We put 20 to 30 of your buyers' real questions to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers and record who got named, what got cited, and anything said about you that was wrong. You get the results and the list of sources that decide your category, whether or not you hire us.

What makes a good GEO agency?

Look for a question set built from your buyers' real questions, monthly reporting on citation share that you keep, and a plan for earning mentions in sources the agency does not own. Be wary of anyone who sells GEO as schema markup alone or promises a citation.

Do you work with businesses outside New York?

Yes. We cover the tri-state area and the rest of the US, and if you sell nationally we track each market that matters to you, since an engine answering about Chicago can cite different sources from one answering about New York. We also have offices in Toronto, Dubai, Mumbai, New Delhi and Bengaluru.
